The Old Wellingtonian Lodge was sorry to lose one of our longest standing and devoted servants, John Jehu Ross Barnard, at the age of 83. He died on 2 November 2022.

RIP – Major Robert Bartlett
The Old Wellingtonian Lodge is sad to announce the passing of our friend and brother Major (rtd) Robert Anthony Bartlett of the Middlesex Regt (later the Queen’s) yesterday, 7 June 2021.
Bob was a true gentleman, a friend renowned for his great humour, fine company and inimitable ritual style.
Born in 1940 He was in the Picton from the Michelmas Term of 1954. He overlapped with several of the current members of the Lodge – he was a year behind JRB and a few years ahead of Peter Gibbs and John Edwards.
He was a good athlete, representing College in the VIII from the First Block (the photograph below shows him in his first year in the College team) and was the Secretary in his last year. His 51.8 second 440 yards at Ifley Road was notable in 1958 as was his retention of the Faringdon Cup for College at the Berkshire Championships. He also matched the College record of 10.1 seconds over 100 yards.
Having also been Secretary of the Boys’ Games Committee, a Corporal in the Corps, as well as a Dormitory Prefect it is perhaps unsurprising that he left Wellington to go “over the hill” to Sandhurst in 1959 as part of the September ’59 Intake XXVII. He was one of fifteen OWs in that Intake and became JUO. In 1961 he was commissioned into the Middlesex Regiment, being promoted Lieutenant in 1963 and Captain in 1967 by which time the Regiment had become the Queen’s. He retired as a Major in 1992.
He joined to Lodge in 2006, being proposed by his great friend Chris Collins, and was installed as Master in 2012.
He shall be much missed.

Armistice Meeting: Victoria Rifles Lodge No 822
The Old Wellingtonian Lodge would like to pay tribute to the Worship Master and Brethren of Victoria Rifles Lodge No 822 for the wonderful and moving tribute paid to the fallen at the Armistice Day meeting held in Grand Temple on 10 November 2018.
In particular the brethren would like to commend the leadership of one of our own, W Bro James Milne who served as Master of Victoria Rifles for the years either side of the meeting.

College Meeting 2019
The OW Lodge held its annual meeting at Wellington College, the 426th meeting of the Lodge, on 11 May 2019.
The sun beat the rain as Wellington put Radley to the sword (or bat) on turf, and we had visitors too – old friends and new joined us from the Old Rugbeians, Stanwell, Be Prepared, the Old Uppinghamians and the Provincial Grand Master of Berkshire.
The Worshipful Master Sid Mallya conducted a wonderful and rare ceremony – it is rare and indeed special when a member of a Lodge brings his son into masonry; that new mason is known as a Lewis and the continuity of masonry receives a special boost. It is rarer still when a son brings in his father, as was the case on this occasion.
We repaired to Great School for drinks, being joined by more friends from the Lodge and College including CMStGP, Murray Lindo and the Master Elect, James Dahl who honoured us with a few words on the state of College.
The Master Elect of College designated a charity for the evening, WOW or Widening Opportunities at Wellington, which the Lodge was pleased to support with a donation of £500, and a matching contribution of £500 to the Herbert Trust, now part of the wider College charities, which supports the education of OW’s children.
Dinner was enjoyed by 38 members and guests, and lamenting the passing of the Waterloo Hotel we departed into the late evening to the sounds of the clock over Porters’ Lodge.
The dinner is an open affair, and all members of the Wellington Community are most welcome. Next year we shall be meeting on 30 May, so please email the secretary if you would like to attend. All are most welcome.
